Role in the project: Principal Contractor

The School of Historical Studies currently has seventeen full-time academic staff, including five Professors, two Senior Lecturers and ten Lecturers, and two secretaries. It also at present has two research fellows: one Sir James Knott Research Fellow, and an AHRB Research Fellow in North East History. Newcastle History Department is extremely proud of its innovative and challenging historical research. We run regular conferences and study days, and a wide variety of seminar programmes, increasingly in collaboration with colleagues in other disciplines.

The members of the School of Historical Studies have an unusually broad range of research interests, in both chronological and geographic terms, ranging from the first millennium AD to late twentieth-century British politics, and from China and East Asia to the USA and Caribbean, Western, Central and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia and the former USSR.

The School has a high research profile, with most of its staff internationally recognized as authorities in their particular areas. The range of its interests, both chronologically and geographically, is unusually wide for a comparatively small group. Particular research strengths extend from the early middle ages to the present day, including North American, Eastern and Western European, Chinese and Russian history as well as the history of Newcastle and its region, and religious, social and comparative world history as well as political and diplomatic history.
